LATAR BELAKANG DAN RILIS

One Chance yang diproduseri oleh Simon Cowell memunculkan swift yang dia ketahui sebagai memiliki hubungan dengan Harry Styles Personil One Direction dengan ideanya untuk memunculkan Swift dalam Projectnya. Swift menurut laporan ‘Berpindah’ dari Konsep film dan terinspirasi untuk menulis lagu itu film tersebut. Pembantu-Penulis lagu adalah Jack Antonoff, yang mengakuo ‘Sweeter than Fiction” milik Vibe dari John Hughes, dan yang mengetweet bahwa dia “MENYUKAI bekerja bersama Swift”.

Swift menyatakan dalam sebuah wawancaranya dengan Blog Musik Country ‘Taste of Country’ bahwa dia telah meilhat film sebagai sebuah kisah cinta dengan tambahan untuk sbeuah perjalan seorang pria menuju kesuksesan, dan keinginan untuk menjadi penulis lagu ini berawal dari perspektif: “Aku sangat terinspirasi oleh Konsep cinta. Dan film ini, memiliki banyak jalan, …. Sebuah kisah cinta istrinya …. Yang untuknya” Penjelasan Swift. “Kisah itu mengenaiku dan sangat cocok untukku. Aku ingin menceritakan sebuah kisah secara musikal dari perspektif tadi”

Lagu ini dirilis secara digital kepada reatailer sebagai Single dari  Soundtrack Film yang akan datang One Chance pada 21 Oktober 2013. Setelah dirilis, Swift mengakui harus ‘melawan’ labelnya untuk memperbolehkan merilis “Sweeter than Fiction”, sebagai dia mencoba untuk mengisi waktu luangnya dalam peluncuran album ke limanya. Big Machine Records diketahui mengatakan ke Swift bahwa ‘Tak ada musik baru sampai Album Berikutnya Meluncur” tapi Swift menjelaskan bahwa setelah dia melihat film ini, dia bersikeras “Aku harus menjadi bagian dari film ini”

KOMPOSISI

“Sweeter than Fiction” adalah sebuah “Rock-Berwarna”. Lagu Pop-Bubblegum ynag juga mengandung pengaruh dari Synthpop dan gelombang-baru musik. Pengamat musik mengatakan lagu ini mengingatkan kepada Pop tahun 80-an. Lagu ini secara musikal dan secara lirik memiliki beat sedang, dengan Swift menyanyi dari sudut pandang dari Teman lama atau penggemar yang selalu percaya pada sebuah bakat pertunjukkan. “There you’ll stand, Teen feet tall” Swift menyanyi pada bagian reffrein, “and I will say, ‘I Knew it all along”

Empat versi pertama dari lagu berada pada Kunci B Major, dan pada pertengahan lagu berada pada C# Major. Memiliki tempo 134 hentakan per menit dengan durasi 3 Menit 44 Detik.
